WHAT I CAN OFFER YOU

Proofreading

Proofreading is the final stage in the editorial process in which a typeset and previously copyedited manuscript will be reviewed one last time to ensure that it has no errors. The proofreading process reviews the manuscript for typos, grammatical errors, factual accuracy, adherence to the Chicago Manual of Style, and formatting issues, such as word breaks and incorrect page numbers. This is the final polish of a typeset manuscript before it is sent to the printer. In this stage, there isn’t creative feedback, unless there are obvious errors that should be brought to light before the manuscript goes to print.

Copy Editing & Line Editing

Copy editing is the stage in the editorial process in which a finished manuscript is reviewed for spelling, grammar, and punctuation. This line-by-line correction of the manuscript includes creative feedback to the author on the quality of the writing with specific suggestions to assist with rewriting or rewording sentences. Comments will include inconsistencies in the story, word choices, redundancies, wordiness, unclear ideas, fact checking, and any other issues that might need addressing. Style guide issues, such as capitalizations and name spellings, will be standardized throughout the manuscript. As needed, there will be some communication with the author during this process to clarify any issues that may arise.

Developmental Editing

Developmental editing is needed when an author is struggling to finish or refine the manuscript. This is a complete and comprehensive editorial service that incorporates copy editing and line editing but also includes working closely with the author to develop themes, characters, plots, structures, writing styles, and storytelling. Those areas needing further development will be identified and extensive comments and feedback will be offered to assist the author in rewriting or further developing the manuscript. Some level of rewriting by the author or an editor will be needed after this stage in the editorial process. If needed, the developmental writer may assist in rewriting the manuscript, or may serve as a ghostwriter for the work.
